The suburban area in question in the eastern outskirts of Pavia at present lacks identity and character; it is used as a dormitory zone where it is easy to lose one’s bearings.
The pre-existing elements of the district, the road and the canal, divide the site into three main areas.
In the outer sectors, the setting up of a university campus is suggested to revitalize the neighbourhood, whilst in the central zone residential buildings are planned with the intention of reordering the built-up area.
The project has been studied so as to confront the two panoramas between which the site acts as a conjunction: on one side urban landscape and on the other the countryside.
The solution adopted for the habitations is to divide the building into two distinct parts, so that on the city side the façade is a compact wall reinforced with sunken windows whilst on the opposite side towards the country, balconies accentuate the movement towards the open landscape interrupted only by the presence of bow-windows which accentuates the vicinity of the countryside. This also allows a better internal division of the flats which have the sleeping area on the city-side and the living area on the green side.
The ground floor has been used for necessary services which are at present lacking for the residents of the area.
Moreover a network of paths have been planned leading from the habitations which then meet in a wide pedestrian avenue planted with trees that connects the most populous areas of the two poles of the university at the outer limits of the site.
For each pole of the university, glass buildings of different dimensions have been used.
To be more easily identifiable the faculty buildings have been partly covered by a unifying stone “sheet” which, on the country side, leaves part of the transparent building uncovered; this stone at ground level becomes the paving of the common spaces and the pathways of the whole university area.
The university service buildings amongst which library, canteen, offices and theatre, are set in the area upon the stone paving and are unified under a roofing of brie soleil which is interrupted only by small gardens planted with trees.
